The limestone quarries at Mickle Hill and Brier Hill in Burton Leonard were active during the late eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century. The southern quarry seems to have continued to burn lime until the early 1940s before being shut down due to concerns about the fires being visible to enemy planes. At the height of production there were five kilns active on the site but I was only able to find one draw kiln in good condition and the remains of the pot from another. At one time the quarried area was shown on maps as "The Limekilns" and the approach is via Limekiln Lane. | |
